Throwing a Moon Jar on the pottery wheel

To me, the moon jar stands as the most iconic and complex form in pottery. I start by centering a sizable lump of clay, making sure it’s stable and balanced. Then, I open the clay into a flat base before gradually pulling up the walls, shaping them into a broad, rounded body with a gently constricted neck. The process requires precise control of pressure, especially as the form begins to expand. I take my time, carefully refining the proportions and symmetry. Once the core shape is established, I add subtle carving and smoothing to achieve the signature, graceful curves that define the moon jar.
