In my work, I decided to incorporate the thumb holder to enhance the tactile experience of each piece. It’s not just functional, but it invites a personal connection with the ceramics, making them feel intuitive and comfortable in the hand. The wave glazing style was born out of my desire to capture the fluidity and beauty of nature. I intentionally designed the glazing to reveal the natural texture and form of the clay beneath, allowing the material’s inherent beauty to shine through while adding movement and depth. This combination reflects my love for modern design, contemporary craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the natural world.
To make each piece I begin by centering a lump of clay on the wheel, wetting it and pressing my hands firmly as it spins. Slowly, I create a well in the center, then pull the walls up with gentle pressure, shaping the clay evenly. As the form rises, I refine it, making sure each curve is just right. Once the shape feels perfect, I press my thumb into the clay, leaving a subtle signature. With a final touch, I use a wire to slice the cup free from the wheel, setting it aside to dry—its form now waiting to come to life.
